'By Leaves We Live'
Following the popularity of Hidden Gardens of the Royal Mile, this walking tour explores another part of Edinburgh's Old Town. You'll follow in the footsteps of the Scottish environmentalist and social reformer, Patrick Geddes - the first person to say 'Think global, act local' - and discover some of the derelict sites he made into children's gardens in the early 20th century Old Town slums. You'll find hidden green nooks and crannies on and off the usual tourist track, find out what today's residents think of their green space, and explore a normally-locked urban wildlife garden. Part of this tour is similar to 2009's 'Green City Wander', although there are new places to visit, too.

The tour is inspired by the Scottish environmentalist Patrick Geddes (1854 - 1932) who wrote: 'We live not by the jingling of our coins, but by the fullness of our harvests. By leaves we live.' Although not as widely known as he should be in his homeland, Geddes's ambitious ideas about creating green spaces in the city are every bit as relevant today. |
